About The Artist

Melokaan: African Jazz Blues
Mamadou Touré, also known as Modou Touré, is the son of Ousmane Touré, who was the lead vocalist with Touré Kunda from 1983 through about 1992. Mamadou has collaborated with several groups and has recorded with Melokaan. From Mamadou Touré's MySpace profile (5/2008):
"Heir to the 1980's superband Toure Kunda from Senegal, Mamadou Toure has created his own style, based on a refreshing and original take on traditional African folk music. A songwriter at heart, Mamadou also composes and arranges his music, as well as playing guitar and percussions. His father Ousmane Toure from Toure Kunda played a major influence on him, as well as Michael Jackson, who else?! His songs in Wolof, Sonninke, Mandinko, Portuguese creole, French and English, talk about love, destiny, origins, identity. They draw from his experience, from a poor childhood to first league footbal championships! He founded the band Tilo (=Sun) in Dakar, and collaborated with Melokaan and Elendo. He is also one of the lead singers for Lolou, based in London. With Melokaan, he performed at Africa Oye in Liverpool in June 2007, and drew attention from the critics and the crowd."

"Melokaan, a group of 3 musicians of based in Dakar, Senegal, plays and sings (often in wolof) the colors of the African life: its joys, its sorrows, its injustices, its traditions. The musicians are Modou Touré as lead vocalist and excellent Djembé player (worthy heir to the talent of his father Ousmane, of Touré Kunda), Ndoffène Diouf, seasoned guitarist and outstanding composer, and Ahmed Ndao, guitarist and author above all."
